The San Joaquin Wine Company Story

Steve Schafer started the San Joaquin Wine Company in 2005 as the fulfillment of a personal passion. Steve, being in the family farming business for over 30 years in Madera California, manages the family's 2,100 grape acreage.. They farm 12 wine varieties including: Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

San Joaquin Wine Company

The San Joaquin Wine Company's Mission statement is to 'Produce the highest quality wines possible at affordable prices from select local grape varieties". Along with farming, Steve has been heavily involved in the California Assoc. of Wine Grape Growers (CAWG), an organization that supports and advocates for California wine grape issues. Through this involvement, including being past chairman, Steve's interest in wines increased as he formed relationships with many leaders in the industry. During Steve's tenure as Chairman of CAWG, one of the concepts he promoted was that growers would never receive the full value of the grapes they produced until they actually produced the wine that was the true end product. He believes that in order to be the best wine grape grower possible, you have to complete the circle and also become a vintner. Steve is also an advocate of sustainable winegrowing practices which was introduced by CAWG and the Wine Institute in 2001. Sustainable farming is a commitment to better stewardship of the vineyards, as well as the community at large. Steve remains a member on the board of the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA).

The San Joaquin Wine Growing Region

The San Joaquin Valley is the largest AVA area in California, larger than Napa and Sonoma combined and is home to 4 American Viticultural Areas. The first grapes were planted in 1850. he San Joaquin valley is filled with fertile and rich soils, which are among the richest and deepest in the world. The mountain ranges in this region drain into the San Joaquin river, and the river deposits the deep loam soils, with are characteristic of the region. The combination of soil and regional weather creates growing conditions that are often ideal and create vines that are naturally vigorous.

The San Joaquin Valley specializes in fruit forward, heat tolerant varieties similar to those found in southwest Australia, Spain and Southern Italy.

The Legend of Moody Press

There once was a small winery in Madera, California that used an Old Century wine press. After a few seasons, it was discovered that the old "moody" press would only operate with the finest quality grapes. Even though the press has been retired, you can still enjoy it's old spirit in every Moody Press wine made only with the finest grapes from California.

We invite you and yours to join us in the tasting of all our Moody Press Cellars wines, and hope the times bring good memories.
